Killer whales (Orca) are the ocean's Apex predator. These incredible whales travel in close-knit family units called pods. These pods consist of a matriarch and her kin. While most people immediately think of places like Washington, Alaska, or Norway when wanting to these killer whales in the wild, we're lucky enough to see them throughout the year here in Santa Barbara. While exceedingly rare, December consistently brings the most sightings of Orca to the Santa Barbara Channel. We were delighted to spend the day after Christmas with the CA140B's off the coast of Anacapa island. Throughout the day, this pod with a brand new calf in tow, hunted both dolphins and sea lions. I was lucky enough to capture some incredible moments of the hunts that I wanted to share with you all. Enjoy my recollection of this spectacular natural event.
